1921 - Born in Havana, Cuba

1936 - Mijares begins his studies in painting in the school of Arts of San Alejandro

1942 - begins exhibiting his work throughout Cuba, and wins different awards

1950 - he participated in a collective exhibition of Cuban painters in the Muesum of Modern Art in Paris

1953 - he begins painting concrete forms, until 1967. He joined the group “Ten Concrete Painters”

1968 - he leaves Cuba and comes into exile in Miami. A few months later he exhibits with the Gala Group( Soriano, Salinas, Riveron, Osvaldo, RoxanaMc Allister) in the Koubek Center in a show entitled “ Generations of Cuban Painters” exhibit. In that same year he participates in “10 Cuban Painters” at the Bacardi Gallery in Miami, and in Washington, D.C.He also participates in a collective exhibit at Antilla Gallery in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

1970 - 1971 Mijares wins the prestigious Cintas Award

1971-1973- Exhibits with the Gala Group in Gloria Luria Gallery and Bacardi Gallery

1976- He is included in Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs by Emile Benezit, Editorial Grund, France( 10 volumes)

1978- Exhibits in the Lowe Museum, Univ, of Miami, Coral Gables, FL., in the Miami-Dade Public Library and in the in the Museum of Modern Arts of Latin America,O.A.S., Washington, D.C.Also at the Bacardi Gallery

1979- Mijares exhibits at the De Armas Gallery,Miami. La Petite Galerie,Burdines, Miami and Meeting Point Gallery in Coral Gables

1981- 1982 Mijares exhibits at the Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach and the Cuban Museum of Art and Culture, Miami

1983 – He shows at New York galleries

1987- Latin American Treasures in the Center for the Fine Arts, Miami and P.A.C.H.A. organizes a restrospective exhibit of his work

1991- Various paintings by Mijares exhibited in Art Miami. Also participates in a show at Marpad Art Gallery, Coral Gables

1993- “Cuba Through Her Artists”, La Boheme Fine Art, Coral Gables, Fl.

1996 – “Mijares En Grande”, personal exhibit in Marpad Art Gallery, Coral Gables, Fl

1997 – Exhibition and book signing ication of “Jose Mijares: Paintings – Pinturas”
